The Challenge
Working on behalf of a main contractor at one of the UK’s major airports, Zenith was appointed to install a specialist resin flooring system across a 6,000m² aircraft hangar.
The demanding environment required a robust flooring solution capable of providing excellent chemical resistance, including protection against aviation fuel and other substances associated with aircraft maintenance. Slip resistance was also an important consideration to help create a safer working surface throughout the hangar.
Prior to commencement, a trial area was installed to allow the flooring system to be tested and approved by the client, providing confidence that the proposed specification would meet the operational requirements of the facility.
Our Solution
The existing substrate was initially prepared using orbital sanding to create a suitable surface for the new resin system.
A high-build epoxy resin coating was then applied, with kiln-dried quartz aggregate cast into the wet coating to excess. The surface was allowed to cure overnight before the remaining loose aggregate was thoroughly removed using vacuum and sweeping equipment.
The final application consisted of a high-build, chemically resistant Vebro epoxy resin coating, creating a durable finish designed to withstand exposure to aviation fuels and the demanding conditions found within an operational aircraft hangar.
To complete the project, our team installed line markings and designated boxes to clearly identify the positions of service covers throughout the hangar.
Features & Benefits
The specialist flooring specification combined chemical resistance, durability and slip resistance to meet the operational requirements of the aircraft hangar:
Orbital sanding: Prepared the substrate for effective adhesion of the resin system
High-build epoxy resin coating: Created a durable surface suitable for a demanding hangar environment
Kiln-dried quartz aggregate: Provided enhanced slip resistance across the working area
Vebro HBCR final coating: Delivered increased resistance to aviation fuel and other chemicals
Seamless resin finish: Created a practical, hard-wearing surface that is easier to maintain
Line markings: Clearly defined operational areas within the hangar
Designated service cover boxes: Improved visibility and identification of service cover locations
The Result
The completed 6,000m² flooring system provides a durable, chemical and slip resistant finish suited to the challenging conditions of an aircraft hangar.
The project was successfully delivered within the three-week programme and agreed budget, with the client expressing extreme satisfaction with the quality of the finished installation.
